Job Hunting During the Holidays
The holiday season is a great time to expand your professional network and search for job openings. This is partly due to the fact that increased demand requires additional temporary or permanent staffing, and partly because many companies are recruiting new positions for a fresh start in the new year. Understanding how to optimize your job search around this time of year will allow you to implement effective strategies to secure your desired role.
The advantages to job hunting around this time of year could very well be the offering of seasonal opportunities. If you are looking to supplement your full-time income with a defined end date, a seasonal opportunity could help provide value to an organization and bring in some additional cash around the end of the year. Also, there are many fewer competitive applicants due to so many looking to delay their job search until the new year. A hiring manager might be able to spend more time with your resume when there are fewer applications for any given position.
Here are a few tips to make your job search more effective this holiday season:
- Prioritize your time – You might have more free time during the holidays, especially if you are currently employed. During your holiday PTO is a great time to search for open positions, improve skill proficiencies and network.
- Make connections – The holidays are the perfect time to connect with people! Consider sending out a holiday greeting to a former colleague, recruiter, or corporation. There are often many events being hosted around this time of year as well that can be perfect for networking! See our article ‘Email Greetings During the Holidays’ for tips on crafting that perfect card.
- Update your resume – Have you acquired any new roles or responsibilities this year? Learn new skills or became proficient in professional tools? Achieved any successes that deserve to be called out specifically? You might rewrite certain sections to better highlight your abilities from the last time you updated your resume.
- Consider part time opportunities – working part-time during this season can help in gaining new experiences while searching for a permanent role. The increased availability around the holidays makes acquiring work easier than other times of the year.
