Pros and Cons of Working from Home

Pros and Cons of Working from Home

The Covid-19 Pandemic sparked a trend in remote work. Remote work is a working arrangement completed by an employee of a company that happens outside of a traditional office space. In Canada, over 25% of core age (ages 15-64) employees began working from home due to stay-at-home measures put in place to cope with the raging pandemic. According to Stats Canada, “These unprecedented changes in the proportion of Canadians working from home raise several questions for employees and employers regarding the work arrangements that should prevail once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.”

At this point in time, you may be considering a change in career, or perhaps, deciding whether you feel comfortable re-entering traditional office workplaces.

The ongoing debate over remote work continues to keep people divided, however, regardless on which side of the spectrum you may fall, all agree on the advantages and disadvantages to either side.

Consider this list of advantages:

  1. You are more independent – when working from home, your daily tasks and schedule are almost completely defined and accomplished alone.
  2. You can increase your productivity – without the distractions of office life and chatter, many people have found working from home a conduit to a more efficient routine.
  3. You will master communication skills – thanks to Zoom, Teams, Skype, e-mail, text, phone, and so many other technologies businesses have relied on for communication, you will become more well-rounded and precise in how you communicate with your colleagues and teammates.

Consider this list of disadvantages:

  1. Work-life balance can be distorted – at times, working from home can start to feel like living at work. It can be a difficult transition to logging off without the action of a commute.
  2. Decrease in collaboration – oftentimes, employees have noted feelings of being out of the loop in greater business discussions outside of individual responsibilities.
  3. Forced to overcommunicate actions – without being able to physically show teammates dedication and commitment to work, some have felt forced to overcommunicate every minute detail of their day.

Despite where your opinions may fall within agreeing or disagreeing with remote or hybrid work, there is WFH etiquette that everyone can agree on.

How to meet in the middle:

  1. Remain professional – at your best effort, try to keep home life off-screen when working from home. Try putting yourself on ‘mute’ when the doorbell is ringing, for instance!
  2. Set recurring meetings – to keep up with the regular cross-collaboration of office life by checking in with your team members or colleagues on a regular basis.
  3. Be responsive – during regular business hours, keep yourself available and active!
